Charge Four Negroes Slugged Pastor, Wife
Rev. R. C. Campbell Files Information in Mayor Woodrow’s Court
Assault and battery charges were filed in Mayor Frank M. Woodrow’s court today against four negroes, one a woman, in connection with the alleged “slugging” of Rev. and Mrs. R. C. Campbell in North Newton Thursday night.
The charges were filed by the Rev. Mr. Campbell, Negro pastor of the African Methodist Episcopal church in North Newton, who was recently returned to the position for his third year.
The minister said he and his wife were slugged by Ralph Brookens, Lewis Tu__s, Frank Moore and his wife, Priscilla Moore, as the result of disagreement brought to a head by the Rev. Mr. Campbell’s reappointment.
Mrs. Campbell was treated at a doctor’s office for a cut on the head, bruises on one arm and scratches down her neck. Her husband managed to give himself first aid treatment, he said.
Mayor Woodrow has set a hearing for Saturday at 2 p.m.
