Leaves One Home for Another

Many a time, just when the mother and father and brothers have learned to lean on a daughter of the household so much that she seems indispensable to them, just then comes some young man a-wooing,- and before many moons go by, she of her own will leaves the home-roof to be the sunshine of another where she is to be both mistress and wife. Strange, isn’t it, and still the tyrant Love asks the first place and receives it. Such a daughter was Miss Flora Buchanan, her parents being Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Buchanan, who live northwest of Newton several miles. All speak of her devoted service in the home in every way that a loving daughter and sister would prove herself useful, and all congratulate George Clark, our enterprising business man, in securing such a treasure. The wedding occurred last Thursday evening. About 140 guests were present. Rev. E. Durant performed the ceremony and Mrs. A. J. McGregor played the wedding march. Miss Ora Brant and John Buchanan, brother of the bride, stood up with them. The bride was dressed in a handsome own of cream wool, trimmed with satin ribbon, made with basque and short skirt, high necked and long sleeved, and carried bride’s roses. The bridesmaid wore a dainty dress of white swiss, with blue trimmings. The bridal party stood in front of a double window which had been converted into a lovely bower with lace curtains and heavy strands of smilax. The warm congratulations that followed, the elegant presents given and the splendid supper served were parts of a very enjoyable evening for all.

Mr. and Mrs. Clarke are now getting settled in their new home in South Newton and will be “at home” in a few days. ~ The Newton (Iowa) Journal, 10-9-1895.

Transcriber note: Two spellings of Clark. Newton Union Cemetery, where they are both buried, has Clark with no e on the end.
