Married 50 Years
Mr. and Mrs. August F. Henning of 920 W. 3rd St. S., Sunday observed their golden wedding anniversary.
Their three daughters, Mrs. Garold Fullmer of Newton, Mrs. Paul Kelly of Des Moines and Mrs. S. O. Thorlaksson, Jr. of McArthur, Calif., were hostesses for open house held during the afternoon.
Guests were received by Ruth Jackson, parlor hostess and Garold Fullmer, a son-in-law. Janet Miller was at the guest book and Mrs. Maurice Joy at the gift table.
The serving table was laid with white linen and centered with an arrangement of spring flowers and lighted tapers in Dresden candlesticks, gifts of the late Mrs. Howard Snyder.
Mrs. Ralph Miller, a niece and Jayne Anne Brock, a granddaughter, poured. Mrs. Horace Brooks, a sister-in-law and Mrs. Richard Stewart, assisted.
Gold creamers, sugars and nut dishes were loaned by Mrs. M. E. Redeen. They belonged to her mother, the late Mrs. W. H. Blancke. A sterling silver teapot that was a wedding gift of Mrs. Henning’s mother and is more than 100 years old was used. It set on an English china hand painted stand, a gift of Mrs. D. L. Mooar.
The linen cloths on the serving table and guest book table were gifts from England. A hand-crocheted cloth, laid over gold on the gift table, was from Mrs. Herman Berreau of Sioux Falls, S. D.
Among the 130 guests who called were Don Messick of Hutchinson, Kan., Mr. and Mrs. Will Hasselbrink and Mr. and Mrs. Don Hasselbrink of Grinnell. Mrs. Will Hasselbrink is a sister of Mr. Henning. Others came from Newton and nearby towns.
A telegram was received from Mrs. Phil Ross of Chicago whom Mrs. Henning met in 1932 when both were aboard ship, en route to England. Mrs. Cecil Kono of Minneapolis, Minn., a niece, called long distance. Mrs. Thorlaksson, daughter of the couple, called from McArthur, Calif., as she was unable to be present. Because of weather and bad roads many friends and relatives were also unable to call.
Mrs. Henning was attired in a lavender dress with gold corsage, a gift of grandchildren. Mr. Henning wore a dark blue suit with gold boutonniere.
The former Pansy Brooks and August Henning were married March 6, 1912 at the old Lutheran church on the corner of N. 3rd Ave. and 1st St. N., with the Rev. W. L. Bright officiating.
In addition to the three daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Henning have five grandchildren: Carol, Freda and Thor Thorlaksson, Cheryl Anne Kelly and Jayne Anne Brock; also a great granddaughter, 5-months-old Audrey Anne Brock.
The couple received numerous flowers, gifts and cards. Among the gifts was a large tiered cake, baked and decorated by Mrs. Dale Sutphin.
