Jicklings to Celebrate Golden Wedding March 5th
Will Hold Open House Afternoon and Evening on That Day
Mr. and Mrs. William Jickling, lifetime residents of this vicinity, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Friday, March 5th, holding open house from 2 to 5 in the afternoon and 7 to 9 in the evening at their home on East Howard Street, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited.
Clara Belle Day, daughter of Mrs. Thos. J. Day of Greencastle, and Mr. William Jickling, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Jickling of near Ira were united in marriage at the home of the Methodist minister, Rev. Lampman on March 5th, 1898 at Greencastle, Iowa. The ceremony took place at 8:00 o’clock in the evening with the minister and his wife the only witnesses.
The bride wore a becoming dress of brown wool with flowered silk trim. The day had been clear and cold, typical of March in Iowa. While most couples in that day were feted with a “Belling” the Jicklings had three charivaris by neighbors and friends.
After the wedding they went to housekeeping on his own farm southwest of Ira, where they resided until 1915 when they moved to Colfax to the house where they are still living. A true farmer at heart, Mr. Jickling takes an active interest in the operation of the farm to this day, though not doing the actual work. Mrs. Jickling though frail in health for many years, takes a keen interest in current happenings and as a hobby spends much time with radio and newspaper contest, having won several worthwhile awards through the years.
A daughter Ethel May died in infancy so their joy of parenthood has been concentrated in the daughter, Mrs. Florence Luther, who resides with them and the grandson Robert Luther, just home Sunday from his trick in the service. Her brother T. L. Day of this city and his sister Mrs. Frank Couch of Ira with nieces and nephews are planning to be on hand for the occasion.
Their many friends are rejoicing with them in their preparation of this eventful day which will climax fifty years of enjoyable companionship and a half-century of righteous living.
