From The Newton Daily News, Thursday, 16 Mar 1933:

To Sell Sanford Estate March 20

Administrator’s Sale to be Held at Farm for Orphaned Daughter

An administrator’s sale of the estate of Floyd Sanford, deceased, will be held by order of court at the farm two miles southwest of Reasnor and six miles northeast of Monroe at 12:30 o’clock Monday afternoon, March 20.

Sheriff Earl Shields has been named guardian for Lucille Sanford, 14, orphaned-daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Sanford who, in addition to a 12-y314-old daughter, were the victims of a triple slaying last week by Mahland Shipley, the hired man, who committed suicide after murdering the father, mother, and daughter. He also has been named administrator of the estate.

The girl, the sole surviving member of the family, has been brought to Newton under the guardianship of Sheriff Shields and has been made a member of the Shields family, also starting to school in Newton.

The entire Sanford estate, consisting of livestock, grain, farm machinery, equipment, and household commodities will be sold at public auction. Harry Worth of Monroe will be auctioneer, with M. G. Addicks of Newton as clerk. Details of the sale may be found in a sale ad in today’s Daily News.

All money derived from the sale will be used for the girl’s education and livelihood, it was said.
