Mrs. Anna Day, Colfax, Observes 81st Birthday
Lifelong Resident Honored by Daughter on Anniversary
COLFAX – A beautiful birthday courtesy was extended on Monday, Feb. 20, to Mrs. Anna Stock Day, 81, by her daughter, Mrs. George H. Halliwill at their home on North Elm Street in Colfax. Eleven honored guests were called for at their homes and driven by Mr. Halliwill to the scene of the “Friendly gathering” the place and purpose of which had been kept secret in the invitations.
The afternoon was spent in the reading of interesting sketches and poems and reminiscences bearing directly on the life of the honoree, and the singing of favorite songs and hymns.
Following the social hour the guests adjourned to the dining room where the table had been attractively arranged in keeping with the occasion.
Seven large t6apers were burning in the center of the table to represent the seven decades of the “Three score and ten years” in the life of Mrs. Day. Eleven smaller tapers on miniature birthday cakes, one at each guest’s place, represented the additional years of her long and useful life. The colors of yellow and white were used. Tiny calendar placecards added to the attractive decorations, as well as some interesting antique glass, silverware and china.
A large and delicious old-fashioned birthday cake was cut by Mrs. Day.
While seated at the table the company repeated the 23rd psalm and a toast was proposed and drunk to Mrs. Day’s future.
Those sharing in the courtesy were the Mesdames Cora Crisman, Burtress Baker, Lydia Loyer, Ada Thomas, Georgia Wells, Alvertta Ferguson, Dota Falcon, Miss Nellie Buck and the hostess, Mrs. Eudora Halliwill. Three of the invited guests could not attend.
Mrs. Day is a native of Jasper county and daughter of James Sr., and Sarah Stock, pioneers of the county. One of 13 children, she has one sister living – Mrs. Mary Evans of Colfax, Ia. She was united in marriage to Nathan Axtel Day on August 26, 1878, at Atlantic. To this union seven children were born. Those living are Clair A. Day of Osborn, O., Mrs. Nellie Smith of Maryville, Mo., and Mrs. Eudora A. Halliwill of Colfax.
