GIFFORD, D. L.
Farmer; Sec. 15; P. O. Newton; born in Allen Co., Ind., in 1840; removed to Green Co., Wis., in 1848; thence to Jasper Co., Iowa, in 1854. Has seventy-five acres of land, valued at $60 per acre. Married Miss Nancy A. WATKINS in 1866; she was born in Kentucky in 1848; they have three children-Eddie S., born in 1867; Alice S., born in 1868, and Howard T., born in 1871. Greenbacker. Enlisted in Co. K, 28th Iowa Inf., in Aug. 1862; participated in the battles of Port Gibson, Vicksburg, Jackson, Champion Hills, Banks' Red River raid, with Sherman in the Shenandoah Valley; made Fifth Corporal and Color Guard; mustered out at Savannah, Ga., in Aug., 1865. ~ "Palo Alto Township Biographies," The History of Jasper County, Iowa, (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878)
