Mr. McCONNELL was amongst the earliest settlers; came here when the prairies were wild, and in limited circumstances; by hard work and economy has left his family in comfortable circumstances enough to keep the wolf from the door. Mr. McCONNELL also enlisted in the Union army in defense of this country, in the 23d Regiment Iowa V. I.; at the siege of Vicksburg, he contracted a disease of which he died a short time after getting home. ~ "Mound Prairie Township Biographies," The History of Jasper County, Iowa, (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878)
