DEAKIN, John Q.
Retired, Monroe. He was born in Warren Co OH in 1809 and in 1830 went to Vermillion Co IL. He served in the Black Hawk during the years 1831-32. He came to this state in 1846, and to this county in 1847, settling in Des Moines Twp. He laid out the village of Vandalia where he built grist and saw mills which were run under is supervision sixteen years. He was also engaged in the mercantile buisness in Vandalia for six years. He owns 300 acres of land in Des Moines Twp., the village of Vandalia being located on a portion of it; also 480 acres of land in Guthrie Co., IA. He was elected County Surveyor in the early days of this county, and held this position for several years. He has also held various local offices. He has been married twice, first wife being Miss Sarah SHEHRER, and his present wife is Irene PEIRCE. He has six children-- two of his sons were in the Union Army during the war of the rebellion-- William W. and James Edwin. They served in Co. E. 14th I. V. I. and were honorably discharged.
