Pioneer Resident Has Varied Experiences
Friday, March 20th, Mrs. C. M. Holland had been a resident of Colfax for 59 years. During that time she has had many experiences, the loss of her husband Dr. C. M. Holland 32 years ago being one that was very hard to bear. Perhaps a still greater loss came March 8th of this year in the death of Mrs. Josie Scott, who died at her home at Dorchester, Neb., in that it was her last sister and last living relative of that generation.
Among the more sunny experiences was one which happened a few weeks ago when she recovered her gold watch which had been stolen. Mrs. Holland had allowed a young man taking subscriptions for magazines to come into the house where he quickly observed her gold watch, a gift of her husband 44 years ago, which was lying beside her Bible on the table. He asked her for a drink and while she went after it he took the watch. After he had gone, the noon whistle blew and as was customary, she went to get her watch to check the time. Not finding it she figured the young man took it and told her neighbor. He told her to write out description of the man and he would take it to the authorities. She said she didn’t have much faith the officers would do anything about it, but she sent down the description. In a short time one of the officers came for a more complete description and before long the man was found at one of the downtown oil stations. He was taken to the mayor’s office here where he was searched and the watch located. She says she still can’t believe he could do it for he was such a nice looking, well dressed young man. However, she has decided it is best not to let any kind of an agent in the house any more.
Mrs. Holland, though nearing her eighty fourth birthday, is able to do her own work, attend church services, and takes an active part in the Missionary and Aid Society. She has a cheery philosophy of life which is an inspiration to those of us who have not yet lived so many years.
