SIMON SAGER

Simon Sager was born October 24, 1814, in Union County, Ohio. His father, Christian Sager, had been married in West Virginia to Maria Elizabeth Shover. He lived in Louden County, Virginia, until about 1806 when he settled in Unionville, Ohio. One of thirteen children, Simon learned to work early.

Simon was married January 1, 1842, in Madison County, Ohio, to Mrs. Eliza (Alder) Francis, whose first husband had died shortly after their marriage. Her father , Jonathon Alder, had been captured by Indians at the age of three and had lived with them until he was about twenty-eight years old. He was married to her mother, Mary Blount, in 1806.

Simon and Eliza lived on Ohio until about 1850. Stopping in Illinois for a few years, they arrived in Jasper County, Iowa, about 1855. Simon farmed until his death, which occurred on the farm in Section 2 of Poweshiek Township, June 15, 1892. Eliza survived him until April 16, 1912, when she died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Jennings, in Newton. They are both buried at McKeever Cemetery.

Simon and Eliza were the parents of eleven children. They were:

1. Ruth, born in Ohio in 1842, married Edward Huling in 1865, and died the same year.

2. Christian, born November 12, 1844, in Ohio, married Rebecca Jane Green. Their children were Edward and Annis. Christian died in 1921. Edward died young and is buried at McKeever. The others are buried in the Walnut Cemetery in Pottawattamie County, Iowa.

3. Mary Sager, born December 31, 1846, in Ohio, married Francis (Frank) Baldwin. They were the parents of eleven children: Julius Orlando, Charles, Fred H., Mrs. Eugene (Bertha) Travers, Sidney, Luella. William Karl, Asa, Mrs. J. Everett (Eliza V.) Creque, Mrs. William A. (Lydia) Atchison, and Frank D. Baldwin.

4. Elizabeth Ann (called Lib) Sager was born February 15, 1849. She was married February 27, 1867, in Jasper County, Iowa, to Alonzo Burris. They were the parents of six children: Helia, Edward, Louis, Sherman, Frank, and Minnie. Alonzo passed away and Lib married Henry Saunders. Their daughter, May died in her teens. Elizabeth (Sager) Burris Saundres died February 18, 1917, at Grangeville, Idaho.

5. Jonathon Sager was born Nover 8, 1852. He married Sybil Moll, the daughter of Nathan and Rosanna (Lee) Moll, in Jasper County, Iowa, April 18, 1875. Their Children were: Edward, Charles, Sarah, Rosa, and Lydia. Sybil was sitting in the rocking chair one morning when Jonathon reached into the attic to get a clevis. He knocked the shotgun from a rack on the wall. It hit the cookstove and went off, the shot going through the baby and lodging in Sybil. The baby died the next day. Sybil improved physically but became very despondant. As a result, she drowned herself. Jonathon later committed suicide. The only child that lived to maturity was Rosa. She was married to Jess Boyd, and had four children: Russell, Inez, Roy Lee, and Harry.

6. Thomas J. Sager was born January 21, 1856, at Canton, Illinois. He was married married March 13, 1878, in Jasper County, Iowa, to Ellen Harris, and had two children: Mrs. James (Mary Ellen "Dot") Willis and James Malcom. Ellen died and Tom married again in 1900 to Mrs. Mary Jane (Berry) Willis.

7. & 8. Twin daughters, Arminta and Arminda, were born April 9, 1856, in Jasper County, Iowa. Arminta died when less than a year old. Arminda died about 1873 at the age of seventeen. Both are buried in unmarked graves in Ashton Cemetery.

9. Amanda (Mandy) born June1, 1859, married Samuel Hamill. They had ten children. They moved to Montana and later to Clarkston, Washington, where she died April 18, 1935, just five days after her husband.

10. & 11. William Henry and Rhoda Almira will be found elsewhere.
