KENDIG, Maria
Farming; S. 15; P. O. Box Colfax; born in Lancaster, Penn., Jan. 11, 1822; her parents lived in Petersburg. She married John KENDIG May 1841. He learned the blacksmith trade when young, and followed it for ten years after marriage; then he kept the "Silver Spring Hotel" at Silver Spring, Penn., for seventeen years. They came to this county in April 1868, and engaged in farming, which he followed till Oct. 19, 1877, when he died. Their family consisted of twelve children, nine of whom are living - Barbara, born July 20, 1846; Christian R., July 1, 1848; Lizzie, Feb. 15, 1850; John, Aug. 22, 1855; Franklin, April 9, 1857; Emma, July 25, 1859; Almira, Aug. 19, 1861; Ambrose B., April 28, 1863; Elmer E. April 6, 1867. Mrs. K. is now carrying on the farm with the aid of the boys; they have about 60 head of cattle, 100 hogs and an orchard of 300 trees; the farm consists of 360 acres, valued at $35 per acre. ~ "Sherman Township Biographies," The History of Jasper County, Iowa, (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878)
