DANIEL, R. W.
Farmer and Stock Raiser; Sec. 21; was born in Rockbridge Co., Va., May 26, 1843. Came to this county in 1870. Has eighty acres of land, valued at $2,400. Married Margaret A. HEMPHILL. She was born in Missouri, Sept. 25, 1839; mother of four children - Ella V., John W., Charles H. and Lillie G.; the boys died in infancy. His parents came from Virginia when he was 2 years old to Pike Co., Missouri; lived there twenty years thence to Warren Co., Ill.; lived there five years; thence to Jasper Co., Iowa. Enlisted in the Co. C, 3rd Mo. V. C. in 1861; was in the battles of Kirksville, Pilot Knob; was in all the skirmishes of the regiment; was taken prisoner at Centreville, Mo., Dec. 22, 1864; was recaptured on the 25th; mustered out at Macon City, Mo.; was in the service three and one-half years; was Sixth Sergeant, and acted as Q. M. of the company. Raises about 2,000 bushels of corn, 300 of wheat, 500 of oats; turns off twenty-five head of hogs. ~ "Mound Prairie Township Biographies," The History of Jasper County, Iowa, (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878)
