VANATTA, Thomas
Farmer and Stock Raiser; Sec. 10; P. O. Newton; born in Pennsylvania April 11, 1817. Married Martha SHEARER in Pennsylvania in 1837. She was born in Pennsylvania 1820. They have eight children - Nancy (now Mrs. W. MORTON), Mary (now Mrs. W. R. McCULLY in Nebraska), Appoline (now Mrs. Richard KIDDOO, of Missouri), Hannah (now Mrs. A. YOUNG of Kansas), Joseph A., Richard M., Thomas R. and Charles F. Has 280 acres of land, valued at $30 per acre. He moved to Muscatine Co. in 1846; remained eight years, and thence to Jasper Co. in 1854. Before the township of Malaka was formed, he settled 160 acres, and bought the additional 120 acres; made good improvements, set out a good orchard and grove, and has always given a good support to schools, churches, colleges, etc. His son James enlisted in the 5th Iowa V. I.; was wounded twice, in the arm and leg at the battle of Iuka; was under Gen Sigel; was in all the principal engagements with regiment, and discharged with his regiment at the close of the war; he died eighteen months after reaching home from the effect of taking a severe cold while in the army; he enlisted on the 9th of the month; left home on the 9th of the month; was discharged on the 9th of the month; and buried on the 9th of the month.
