SWIHART, Emanuel
Farmer and Stock Raiser; S. 30; P. O. Newton; born in Holmes Co., Ohio, Jan. 1, 1838. Married Mary GINDLESPERGER in Ohio in 1866. She was born in Holmes Co., Ohio in 1843. They have three children - Mary Catharine, born in Ohio; Allie Wilmina, born in Iowa, and Joseph Elsworth, born in Iowa. Has 195 acres of land, valued at $60 per acre, a dwelling house which cost $2,500, good barns, a large bearing orchard, with all kinds of small fruits, and a large natural grove and all the comforts of life; he has three running springs of water. Mr. S. served in the late war in the 51st Ohio V. I., one year; was in the Battle of Rock River and several smaller battles; was discharged with his regiment at the expiration of his term of service. Mr. S. moved to Jasper Co., Iowa in 1866; commenced farming in limited circumstances; made a specialty of sheep raising and wool growing; was very successful, acquired a good property, and alweays lent a helping hand, and gave cheerfully to schools and churches and other charitable societies.
