SILSBY, W. H., Col.
Farmer; Sec. 12; P. O. Newton; born in Pennsylvania, Aug. 31, 1822. Married Helen M. SMEAD in Iowa in 1855. She was born in New York in 1839. They have four children - Charles, John, Mary and Esther. Has 100 acres of land, valued at $4,000. He moved to Iowa in 1854; he has held the office of Justice of the Peace in Newton; was Postmaster six years in Newton, and was U. S. Marshal in 1860; he was engaged in the furniture and mercantile business in Newton. He enlisted as private in Co. I, 10th Iowa V. I.; was promoted to First Lieutenant and then to Captain of Co. A; then to Lieutenant Colonel, and commissioned as Colonel of teh 10th Iowa; he was in the Army of Tennessee, under the different leading Generals; was in the siege of Corinth, Island No. 10, and Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Mission Ridge, Savannah and Atlanta; was in four years of active service; was in all the principal engagements; was in Gen. Sherman's march to the sea; received some slight wounds; returned home to his farm and family after the close of the war, in Sept. 1865. He is a member of teh A., F. & A. M.
