BURTON, John
Farmer; Sec. 36; P. O. Granville; owns 340 acres of land, 100 of which is in Poweshiek Co., the whole is valued at $12,000; born in Barbour Co., West Virginia, July 3, 1830; came to this State in 1853, settling in Richland Township, Mahaska Co., within a few rods of Jasper Co. line, where he resided till 1862, and moved to Granville and engaged in the mercantile and stock business; at the end of the year, however, he disposed of his interest in the mercantile business, but continued handling stock till 1864, when he moved to his present farm, which is one of the finest in the township. Mr. BURTON's stock at present consists of forty-three head of cattle, six horses, and about 100 hogs. He married Maria MARTIN, in West Virginia, in 1851; she was also born in Barbour Co., February 11, 1831; their children are-Melker J., born September 27, 1852; Clara C., born May 7, 1854; Samuel L., born January 21, 1856, died November 13, 1856; A. Perry, born February 26, 1860; Etta A., born September 6, 1862; Sophia M., born March 15, 1865; John F., born July 28, 1869, and Myrtle L., born September 17, 1872. Is a Republican, and a member of the M. E. Church. Since coming to this county Mr. BURTON has been a leading man in his neighborhood, being among the first in everything that tended to elevate humanity, and the citizens have shown their appreciation of him by calling him to fill the office of County Commissioner three years, besides other positions of trust, which he has filled honorably. ~ "Lynn Grove Township Biographies," The History of Jasper County, Iowa, (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878)
