MATEER, John
Farmer, Sec 36, P.O. Monroe. He was born in Ireland in 1828, and came to this county in 1849. he lived in Pittsburgh PA until 1853, then went to NY and sailed to California where he followed mining until 1856. In the Fall of that year he returned to Pittsburgh, remaining until 1861 when he came to this county. He married Miss Ellen Vinyard in this county in 1868. She was born in Linn Co. in 1846.

They have three children--Arestine Sarah, Laura N. and Clemenza Edna. During the war Mr. Mateer enlisted in Co E, 40th Iowa V. I. He was honorably discharged 2 Aug 1865He was in several battles, among them being the siege of Vicksburg. There were two of Mrs. Mateer's brothers in the army--L. C., and Thomas J. Vinyard. L. C. enlisted in the 4th IA V. C. and died in the service. Thomas J. also enlisted in an IN regiment. He served three years and seven months and was honorably discharged. Their father William Vinyard, was a native of Virginis. He was born 24 Nov 1811 and came to Linn Co., in 1830. He married Sarah Carroll who was b. in Canada. They came to Jasper Co. in 1865. He was ordained Deacon of the Missionary Baptist Church in Marion Co, and died in this county in 20 Aug 1875. Mr. Mateer and family are members of the United Presbyterian Church, he is a Republican, and owns 200 acres of land.
