HIGHLANDS, William

He was the first white settler of this county and was born in Cumberland Co., PA in 1803. He went to Ohio in 1828 , and then to IL in 1838 where he remained until May 1843 when he moved to this county and settled on his present farm. He married Miss Ellen SLAIN. She was a native of Virginia. Mr. Highlands owns 160 acres of land. He is a Republican, and was the first Justice of the Peace elected in this county. He has witnessed and endured all the hardships and privations of pioneer life and is now justly entitled to the comfortable competency he enjoys. ~ Fairview Township Biographies "The History of Jasper County" (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878) page 558
