COWLES, George M.
Bookkeeper at Langan and Tafts, Monroe. He was born in Summit Co., OH in 1849, removed to this city with his parents in 1855. He married Miss Emma FOSTER in Indianola, IA. She was born in Indiana in 1848. They have one child-- Fannie, born in Monroe 25 Dec 1874. He is a Republican, and a member of the Masonic Fraternity, also a member of the A.O.U.W. He was elected City Treasurer in 1877 and in 1878 and is the present incumbent of that office. His father, Oliver Cowles, was born in NY in 1808. He married Miss Hanna M. OLMSTEAD, Otsego Co. NY in 1830, and in 1838 they moved to Summitt Co., OH, thence to this county in 1855. They have nine children all of whom are living. One of their sons served during the war of the rebellion, he served three years and was honorably discharged. ~ Fairview Township Biographies "The History of Jasper County" (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878)
