SHELLEDY, VANCE

SHELLEDY, Stephen B., deceased; born in Fleming Co., Ky., in 1801; moved to Ohio, and thence to Indiana. Was married to Elizabeth VANCE in 1824. Moved to Illinois in 1825; to Mahaska Co. in 1843; engaged in mercantile business in Monroe, Jasper Co. Served in the Black Hawk war, and promoted to rank of Colonel. Served two terms in the Legislature of Illinois, representing Edgar Co.; was a member of the Territorial Legislature of Iowa in 1844-5, when Jasper and other counties were organized; he also represented Jasper Co. in the State Legislature, and was Speaker one term; also held the office of State Marshal with the rank of Colonel, and as a commissioned officer he served in the late civil war, and returned in broken health, and died Dec. 17, 1870. ~ "The History of Jasper County" (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878), 646
