HANES, GROOMS

HANES, W. A.; Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 6; P. O. Prairie City; born in Dearborn Co., May 4, 1830; came to this county in 1855; has eighty acres of land, valued at $4,000. Married Melissa GROOMS; she was born in Indiana March 7, 1837; mother of seven children-Homer C., Curtis, Dorsey E., William G, Brayden, Gordon B., Daisey. Was one of the earliest settlers of the township. Enlisted in the 23d I. V. I., Co. G; was in the battles of the siege of Vicksburg; also at the siege of Matagorda Island; was also detailed to guard ammunition trains; was mustered out at Harrisburg, Texas; has a brother in the battle of Milliken's Bend, where one-half of the command was killed. When he was married, he did not have money enough to buy land large enough to stand her on; but by the sweat of his brow, and industry he has made them a comfortable home. ~ "The History of Jasper County" (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878), 641
