HAMMOND, S. J.; Farmer; Sec. 2; P. O. Prairie City; was born in Dearborn Co., Ind., March 31, 1828; came to this county in the Fall of 1856; has 160 acres of land, valued at $8,000. Politics, Republican. Married Ann M. SWINDELL; she was born in North Carolina Dec. 2, 1825; mother of four living children - Robert A. N., Alice, Enoch and Mercy; lost one child in infancy. Emigrated direct from Indiana to this county, where he has resided since; came through with teams, and camped out and did their own cooking; settled on Sec. 3; bought some of his land second handed; paid about $2 per acre; came here in limited circumstances; had a wagon and a few household goods, and about $50 in his pocket, but by industry and economy, he has made a good property and home; is located near town and railroad depot.
