DOWDEN, Lemuel; Farmer; Sec. 3; P. O. Prairie City; born in Harrison Co., Ohio, Dec. 31, 1820; has 120 acres of land, valued at $6,000. Member of the Christian Church. Married Catherine M. MONCRIEFF; she was born in Wheeling, Va., April 11, 1833; mother of eleven children-Ashford S., born May 8, 1847; Ruth I., Aug. 27, 1849; Bathra J., November 22, 1851; Isadoria E. S., April 10, 1855; Lemuel C., May 17, 1857; E. Hartsell, Jan. 18, 1860; Lucella C., April 19, 1862; Minnie M., April 20, 1864. Mrs. D. died June 14, 1876. Two little boys died in infancy; Mary E., born April 1, 1866, and died August 15, 1866. Mr. D. emigrated from Ohio to Scott Co., Iowa, in 1845; lived there twenty-one years; thence to Story Co., Iowa, lived there one year; thence to Jasper Co., where he has resided since. Bought his land with some improvements, a few acres broken. It is now all under the best of cultivation; has a fine grove planted by his own hands, from forty to fifty feet high; has a fine orchard of 700 trees; twenty-five cherry trees; 500 grape vines, and a variety of small fruit. Mr. D. was drafted, but was refused on account of disability.
