ADKINS, Ezra
Hotel Keeper; Prairie City; born in Litchfield Co., Conn., Dec. 5, 1824; came to this county in 1865; has 160 acres of land, valued at $5,000. Held the offices of Assessor, Township Trustee, Councilman and Justice of the Peace. Is a member of the Congregational Church; has been Sabbath school Superintendent for twelve years. Married Lydia Ann VERTNER; she was born in Champaign Co., Ohio, July 4, 1826; had eight children, four of whom are living-Asenath E. (now Mrs. J. PATCHEN), John V., David H. and Zula May. Emigrated with his parents to Schuyler Co., Ill., in 1835; lived there eighteen years; thence to Henry Co., Ill., in 1853, where he lived twelve years; thence to Jasper Co. Enlisted in 1862 in Co. D, 112th Reg. I. V.; was in several skirmishes; was in the battle of Knoxville, where he was wounded in the arm with a musketball, which caused the amputation of his arm. ~ "The History of Jasper County" (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878), 636.
