Adkins, Emery B., farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 5; P. O. Prairie City; born in Massachusetts Aug. 25, 1831; came to this county in 1867; has eighty acres of land, valued at $4,000. Married Betsy WEST; she was born Sept. 11, 1844; have two children - Hattie M. and Ellen G. Mr. A. emigrated from Massachusetts when he was a child with his parents to Connecticut; lived there about eighteen years; thence to Peoria Co., Ill.; lived there about four years; thence to Henry Co.; lived there eight years; thence to Jasper Co. Raises on an average about thirty acres of corn, nine acres of oats, nine acres of wheat, turns off forty head of hogs yearly; raises some very fine hogs and has one of the best hog houses in the township; has a good farm near market and is in comfortable circumstances. ~ "The History of Jasper County" (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878), 636.
