McCOLLUM, A. J.; Farmer, Sec. 35, P. O. Galesburg; born in Beaver Co., Penn., Nov. 13, 1833, the day of the great meteoric shower; he located in Marion Co., Iowa, in 1854, and in this county in 1869. He married Eliza RETNER, granddaughter of ex-Gov RETNER of Pennsylvania; she died in 1867. He married his second wife, Mary E. HAYES, in 1870; she was born in Russell Co., Ky., in 1852; their children are Andrew C., Harlan C. and Fanny Prudence. They are Baptists; he is a Republican. He owns 211 ½ acres of land, valued at $30 per acre. He enlisted in the 33rd Iowa V. I., and was Sgt. of Co. G; was mustered out Aug. 8, 1865, having served three years as a national soldier. Is Justice of the Peace; served one term as such before, also as Township Trustee. He is engaged in producing a Northern peach from the seed, and has some fine specimens of those peaches in his orchard. ~ "The History of Jasper County" (Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1878), 548.
