Thomas Hanson was born around 1820 in Worcestershire, England, died 30 Jul 1879 in Newton, Jasper County, Iowa, and was buried in Newton Union Cemetery. The handwriting on the 1851 census clearly shows "Allchurch" as his birthplace, but in 1861 it may be "Alvechurch". Alvechurch, Worcestershire, is not far south of Birmingham, Warwickshire.

On 2 Mar 1841 Thomas Hanson, brick maker, bachelor, of full age, son of Thomas Hanson, gardener, married Jane Brothers in St. George's Church, Birmingham. Witnesses were the bride's parents, Thomas and Phoebe Brothers. On 8 Jun 1840, Thomas "Anson" and Jane Brothers witnessed the marriage of her brother William Brothers to his first wife, Caroline King, in West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Like Thomas Hanson, the Brothers and King families were involved in brick and tile making.

Jane Brothers was born in January of 1822 in Birmingham, died 5 Jul 1904 in Newton, Iowa, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Jennie Ferguson, and was buried in Newton Union Cemetery. Nine children, 50 grandchildren and 11 Great-grandchildren survived her.

Thomas' occupation was "banksman" on the 1841 census, which listed him and Jane in her parents' household on Bosley Street in West Bromwich.

Fourteen children were born to Jane and Thomas. Their birthplaces show the family moved several times, back and forth between West Bromwich and
Birmingham, to Oswestry in Shropshire, and to Ruabon, Denbighshire, North Wales.

Around 1920 Joe Brothers of La Center, Washington, wrote a partial list of his aunt Jane Hanson's children. Fortunately, in the book "Past and Present of Jasper County", in the biography of Jane's son-in-law Thomas Smith Jr., are found all fourteen names:

Emma, Eliza, William, Hannah, Fannie, Martha, Jane "Jennie", Thomas "Tom", Phoebe, Arthur, Clara, George, Anna and Charles Hanson. An adopted son,
Henry Harrington, is named in Jane's obituary. Reportedly, two children died in infancy and three had reached maturity and died by 1904.

By 1868 William Brothers had been in the U.S. for over 20 years. He had become successful enough with his brickyard and coal bank at Newton, Iowa,
that he could afford a second trip to England, seek special medical opinions regarding his son Harry's condition and visit his mother, brothers and sisters and their families. He, his second wife, Mary, and Harry spent the winter there
and returned in March of 1869.

Presumably Thomas and Jane would have gotten together with William during his visit. Maybe it was a bright picture he painted of life at Newton, Iowa, that inspired them to make preparations to move.

The passenger list of the S. S. Denmark, which arrived at New York from Liverpool on December 1, 1869, shows the names of Thomas and Jane Hanson
and children Phoebe, Arthur, Clara, George, and adopted son Henry. Census records indicate children Jennie and Tom and their married sister Eliza Moss and her family also immigrated in 1869, and Martha probably came with them. There are hints that William and Anna immigrated, but it's not impossible they stayed behind as did Emma, Hannah and Fannie.

The Hansons settled in at Newton, and Thomas began manufacturing bricks. Presumably he worked along with William before starting out on his own.
William customarily made brick in the summers and worked in the coal bank in the winters. In 1876 William moved away, eventually settling
at La Center, Washington, in 1882. Thomas stayed on in Newton and died there in 1879.
==================================================

The fourteen children of Thomas and Jane Hanson are listed below in order of birth, except for Anna and Charles. Their birth dates are not known. The adopted son, Henry Harrington, is numbered 15.

1. Emma Hanson, born circa 1841 in West Bromwich. The fact that Emma is not listed with her parents in the 1851 and 1861 censuses, but both times in
the household of her grandparents, Thomas and Phoebe Brothers, suggests she may have been raised by them. Her name is mentioned in letters to William Brothers in the U.S. from his nephew Sam Hill and niece Jane (Hill) Lovett at Birmingham. On 2 Apr 1885 Sam wrote that he had not seen or heard of William's brother Tom Brothers lately and that "the same may be said of Emma Hanson, as she has left Price Street and I have not heard anything of her for a long time." He also stated "Dear uncle, I am sorry you have not heard
from my aunt [Jane] as I should like to hear from her, and I hope you will correspond with her..." In a letter dated 31 May 1886 Jane Lovett wrote:
"Emma Hanson still lives in Bath St., Birm'm. She is going on pretty well and in answer to our questions she says that she has written to her mother two or three times lately."

==================

13. Anna Hanson. She presumably married a Mr. Norris. Dates and places of birth and death unknown. The 1912 biography of Thomas Smith Jr. naming the Hanson children states that "George is deceased; ...Charles is deceased; Anna Norris is now deceased". Addition of the word "now" might suggest Anna died more recently than George or Charles. If Norris is her middle name and not her
married name, she might have been one of the two children who died young. She does not appear in the 1851 or 1861 census, was not named in the list of children who immigrated with her parents in Dec 1869, and is not shown as one of her mother's survivors in 1904. Joe Brothers' list of his Hanson cousins does not mention her.
===================

14. Charles Hanson. Named as son in listings of children, but no other record found. Presumably Charles is one of the two children who reportedly
died in infancy.

George M. may be the George Milton Harrington who was b 13 Oct 1881 Iowa, d 24 Oct 1951 Los Angeles Co CA, married Hattie and was a brick setter in
Billings, Montana, in 1918.

William Henry Harrington, b Colfax 23 Jan 1887 [Birth date from WWI draft card; 1900 census shows 1886; age listed as 23 on 1910 census (taken in

LETTERS FROM GRANDCHILDREN:

On 3 Aug 1977 Mabel (Woodrow) Pickens (daughter of Phoebe (Hanson) Woodrow) wrote from Newton: "...I of course remember many of the family,
especially my mother's brothers and sisters and cousins - also my Grandmother Hanson. I sat at her bedside the day before she died at Aunt Jennie Ferguson's near where we lived. I was ten years old." "My dear brother, Geo. Merritt Woodrow, in Toronto (94)...can remember more of family than I. His sight is bad but his good wife, Evelyn, reads to him. He is so alert, wonderful mind and keeps up with everything. He was a wonderful artist." Mabel stated that she and her cousin Mable Hardenbrook and Pauline Woodrow had had
lunch the previous June with Albert Jorgensen. [Al was son of Nettie (Ferguson) Jorgensen and grandson of Jennie (Hanson) Ferguson.]

Mable (Gardner) Hardenbrook, in a letter from Newton dated 24 Jul 1972, wrote "...my mother...was Ida Smith Gardner, whose parents were Martha Hanson and Thomas Smith... I remember when I was young my grandmother visiting Washington State for three months, but I don't know now who she visited." Mable was scheduled to "retire at 65 this fall [1972] after working 47 1/2 years for the same company". In a letter of 1977 she
commented on a picture she thought was of her Grandma Hanson: "...when I showed it to Mabel Woodrow Pickens she thought it was Grandma Hanson.
Mabel is up in her eighties and she remembered her well. Said she used to come visit her folks when she was little. In fact she said she visited around the different sisters quite often..."

[I do not have a copy of the picture Mable was referring to.]
