Elizabeth J. SMITH or SHAW

SMITH, SHAW, MOONEY

I am trying to discover the ancestors of Elizabeth Jennie SMITH, born Jan 1, 1845 in Sabula, Jackson County, Iowa. She left with her mother (named, I believe, Samantha) and step-father for California in a wagon train April 1853. No definite name for step-father, but based on an entry in the California 1860 census, I think the step-father was named SHAW and had died by that time. Any hints on how to track down ancestry using Iowa records? I'm in California but have access to the Mormon Library here. Since Smith is such a common name I was hoping someone on this board would know more about them from territorial days.
