Thanks again,Dick! I am a little skeptical also regarding the age discrepancy, but his proximity to the family and birthplace tend to outweigh the age difference. Sabula is a very small place and the surname is rare. I have searched the census for Anton and Elizabeth Bassell (and similar surname variants) in Iowa and have had no close hits. I did find a JF Bassell listed as a minister in the Jackson Co marriage index for a couple marriages around 1860. Perhaps death or cemetery records for these people can clear up some of these things. I thought the birthplace of the son John H in Ky was inconsistent, but what isn't in ancestry hunting!
