In the 1880 census, William and his prob. sisters appear to be listed in the orphanage near Andrew:
Alice Woods, female, Orphan, age 17, b.Iowa, both par. b.Ireland, Domestic servant, Attended school within year, Can read and write.
Sarah Woods, female, Orphan, age 15, b.Iowa, both par. b.Ireland, Domestic servant, Attended school within year, Can read and write.
Wm. Woods, male, Orphan, age 10, b.Iowa, both par. b.Ireland, Attending school, Attended school within year, Can read and write. In the 1870 census, the family of a William & Margaret Wood are listed in Bellevue:
William Wood, male, age 45, b.North Carolina, Farmer rents, no RE, $400 PE, Can read and write.
Margarett[sic] Wood, female, age 33, b.Illinois, Keeps house, Can read and write.
Ellis[sic] Ann Wood, female, age 7, b.Iowa.
Sarah Wood, female, age 5, b.Illinois.This family is a good match for these three orphan children. Ellis, a female, is a likely candidate for Alice and your William would not have been born yet. The ages of the girls match perfectly. Perhaps these are your William's parents.
The fact that the parents' birthplaces don't match is not a major concern in my mind. If the orphans did not know where their parents were born, the orphanage probably would not have known either. Or the person providing information on the children was not overly concerned with accuracy.
Please let me know if you find this is the correct family. Good luck!
