An Early Settler Gone
Matt Hodson, one of the early pioneers of this locality, died at his home south of the city, on Saturday, after a lingering illness with dropsy. Deceased has been a great sufferer for the past six months and for nearly four months had been confined to the house, death relieving his sufferings at four o'clock on Saturday morning. Matt Hodson was one of Sabula's early settlers and was in business here several years. He operated a ferry boat at this place for some time and also engaged in the saloon business. He was an old river man and has served in the capacity of mate on some of the raft boats. While he presented a rough exterior he possessed a warm heart and none who were needy made application for aid to him without receiving it. Deceased had been married three times and leaves a wife, three children and two step children to mourn his demise. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon at two o'clock and the remains interred in Evergreen cemetery.
