Mrs. Ben Donovan
Succumbs Saturday to Lingering Illness

Bernard (Special): Mrs. Ben Donovan, 56, wife of the former Jackson county supervisor and a member of a prominent Garryowen family, died at her home in Garryowen at 11 o’clock after a lingering illness. Mrs. Donovan had been ailing for the past year and had undergone an operation at Iowa City about a month ago. She was removed to her home about two weeks ago. Her condition had been critical for several days.

Mrs. Donovan, was the former Agnes Burke, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Burke. She was born in Garryowen May 7, 1878. She was a deeply religious woman possessed of a pleasing personality and kindly disposition that endeared her to all who knew her. She was a devout member of St. Patrick’s parish and died fortified by the last rites of the Catholic faith.

She is survived by her husband, four sons, Bernard and Edmund of California; and Burke and Sylvester at home; three daughters, Florence and Cecil at home, and Mary of Dubuque; also three sisters, Sister Davida and Sister Dominica, both of the Sister of Charity B. V. M. of Kansas City, and Mary Burke of California, and two brothers, E. A. and David of Los Angeles, California, also survive. Her parents and three brothers, Lawrence, Henry and Edward preceded her in death.

A requiem mass was read by the Rev. Patrick Malone at St. Patrick’s church, Garryowen, Monday morning at 10 o’clock for Mrs. Ben Donovan whose funeral was being held there. Father Malone also preached the funeral sermon. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery where the Rev. Malone read the prayers at the graveside.

The pall bearers were: Joe Noonan, Patrick Brady, John Federspiel, M. J. Noonan, John Burke, Patrick O’Connell, Neal McDonnell, Earl and Neal Kenneally.

Those from a distance attending the funeral were: Sister Davida and Sister Dominica Burke, both sisters of the deceased, and David Donovan, jr., of Cascade and Frank Donovan of Dubuque.
