Joe Bevans

Joe “Bill” Bevans, 29, of Route 2, Maquoketa, was dead on arrival at Peoples Memorial Hospital in Independence Sunday, Aug. 12, after he fell from a television transmitter tower near Rowley.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. Burial was in Holy Rosary Cemetery in LaMotte.

Friends called after 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Haylock O'Hara & Kedley Funeral Home in Maquoketa, where a vigil service was held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Mr. Bevans was born Nov. 16, 1954 in Moline, Ill., to James and Ida Bird Bevans. He was a 1972 graduate of Andrew Community High School.

He married Cheryl Nemmers on Nov. 2, 1971 at Holy Rosary Church in LaMotte.

He was an iron worker for union Local 111 in Rock Island, Ill.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jenny, Jessica and Crystal, all at home; his parents, Lone Tree; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Dovie Jewel Bevans of Flippen, Ark.; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Sally Jones Bird of North Little Rock, Ark.

Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Bill (Nadine) Kniffer of West Branch; and six brothers, Patrick Henry Bevans of Independence, David Garland Bevans of North Liberty, Michael Ray Bevans of Fairfax, John Mark Bevans of Iowa City, Nathanial Timothy Bevans of Riverside and Paul Nolan Bevans of North Liberty.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers.
