J.J. Beck Lays Down Life's Burdens
Had been engaged in furniture business in Bellevue about forty years.

This community was shocked to learn of the death of J.J. Beck, which took place at his home on west State street, Saturday afternoon, after a brief illness of pneumonia. Mr. Beck had been identified with the business interests of Bellevue for about forty years and was well-known throughout this section.

John Jacob Beck was born July 3, 1846 at Dettingen, Wurtemburg, Germany. He was confirmed in the Lutheran church at the age of fourteen and then learned the trade of a cabinet maker. In 1865, in company with a younger brother, he came to this country in pursuit of his fortune. He located first in Freeport, Ill. then worked his trade at Galena, Dubuque and St. Paul, coming to Bellevue in November 1872 and residing here ever since.

He started a furniture and cabinet-making shop here and by hard work, square dealing and frugal habits succeeded in building up in the course of passing years the present large establishment now under the management of his son, Louis C. Beck.

He was united in marriage with Miss Anna Rebecca Haefker, on January 16, 1874, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Lenz at the Lutheran church. This union was blessed with eight sons and eight daughters, all living but one. Their names are: Mrs. George C. Beck of Austin, Ill.; J.C. of Dubuque; L.C.; Lena M.; Mrs. F. Krumviede of Bellevue; William of Lang, Sask.; Paul of Andrew; Matilda of Bellevue; Esther of Kent; Rudolph of Clarence; Laura L. of Milwaukee, Wis.; Eugene W. of Lang Sask.; Justin J.; Julian J.; Evelyn C. of Bellevue. Also the following brothers: J.C. Beck of Gypsum, Kansas; J.M. Beck of Hanover, Ill.; and six grandchildren. His wife and faithful helpmate passed to her reward June 1, 1906.

The funeral took place Wednesday forenoon from the Letheran [sic] church of which deceased was a faithful and consistent member, Rev. Mutschmann officiating. The pallbearers were Louis Oberman, Wm. Goettler, John Goetz, Fred Adickes, B.A. Relling, Jacob Goetz. Interment in the family lot in the Lutheran cemetery.
