Martin Haley
Martin Haley , for 48 years a Sabula resident, died at his home here at noon, Monday, May 27th at the age of 77 years and 5 months. He was born in County Sligo , Ireland, December 27, 1840 and came to America in 1865, first locating at LaSalle Ill., where he was employed in the woolen mills of which his brother was super-intendent. After spending five years in LaSalle he came to Sabula in the spring of 1870 and assisted in the building of the present railroad of which he continued an employee until nine years ago. At that time he received injuries
in an accident that necessitated his retirement from railroad work after 39 years continuous service.
He was married to Lydia Dobson, of Sabula, on October 25,1870, and to this union nine children were born. Three sons have passed away and the six who with the wife survive, are Ms. Katherine Scobey, and Mrs (Sarah) David Snivley, of Lyons; Martin Jr., Mrs( Margaret) D.C. Meyer and Will , of Sabula; and Matthew, of Ashby, Neb. There is also a brother , Owen Haley , of Lasalle, Ill. Mr Haley was a man of quiet and unassuming manner, excellent habits and a good citizen. He was much attached to his home and found the greatest pleasure in in being with his family and in his home neighborhood.
Funeral services were held from St. Peter's Catholic church at 9:30 o'clock Wednesday morning, Rev. A.N. Tibeau being celebrant of the Requiem Mass. He was laid to rest in St. Peter's cemetery beside the sons who hae preceeded him.
