Brief Sketch of the Life of the Late Sebra N. Howard

Preston, Feb. 1 -- Sebra N. Howard was born in Brantford county, Province of Ontario, Canada, March 25 1840. His father, Charles Howard, born in Ontario, came of New England parentage.
Mr. Howard came to this country in 1855. At the age of 21 he enlisted on the first call for volunteers in Company I, Second Iowa infantry, from 1861 to 1864, most of this time serving under General Grant.
He was honorably discharged by orderly sergeant at Pulaski, Tenn. He was married in DeWitt, Iowa, Nov. 29, 1865, his bride's maiden name being Harriet M. Cook, a daughter of B. T. and Matilda Cook, who were originally from New York and settled here in an early day.
Mr. Howard joined the Upper Iowa conference in 1872. He spent eight years in active ministerial work, when, owing to his wife's poor health, he superannuated in 1880. He served as secretary of the Clinton and Jackson County Aid association for twelve years from 1898 to 1910. Since this time he has resided in the home place, south of Preston with his son Albert.
In late years Mr. Howard has been troubled with heart failure. After spending seventy-one years and ten months in worthy living he died January 27 at 3 a.m. There remain to mourn his death a loyal wife, a son and wife, a foster-daughter and three grandchildren and one brother.
Funeral services were held at the home Monday, January 29 at 1:30 p.m., officiated by Rev. A. W. Lezer of Preston, assisted by Rev. E. A. Lang of Miles.
The Preston M. E. choir sang three favorite hymns of Mr. Howard. They were: "I Shall Know Him," "Till the Boat Comes By," and "Asleep in Jesus."
Interment was made in Vernon Prairie cemetery.
