Maquoketa, Ia., April 19-- The late J. R. Rhodes whose funeral was Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Baptist church, was probably the oldest citizen in this county, being 90 years of age. He passed away at 11:30 o'clock Thursday morning after a brief illness, suffering from a complication of diseases.

John R. Rhodes was born in Lincoln county, Ohio, August 18, 1825. Ohio was his residence until he was nearly 30 years old when he came west and located in Maquoketa, where he followed the trade of cobbler. About the year 1860 he was married and two children were born of this union, when the mother passed away. The children are still living and are Franklin Rhodes, located at Eureka, Mont., and Oliver Rhodes, located at Omaha, Neb . Four years after the death of his wife he was married a second time, this time choosing as his helpmeet Miss Rachel Tracy, with whom he has lived happily and she survives. This union was blessed with five children, two sons and three daughters. The daughters are Mrs. Clementine Comstock of this city, Mrs. Mary Harp, located in the vicinity of Iron Hill and Mrs. Levina Liston of New Haven, Ind.

At the outbreak of the war, Mr. Rhodes volunteered and enlisted in Co. A. Iowa Infantry. He was in the heat of battle and although he escaped any serious injury, his health was impaired by exposure.

At the close of the war Mr. Rhodes and his little family located on a farm near Iron Hill, this county, where for more than thirty years they enjoyed rural life. About twelve years ago Mr. Rhodes bought himself a home in this city and decided that he and his good wife were deserving of a quiet, restful life in their declining years, so retired from active farm life and took up their abode in this city which has since been their home. Mr. Rhodes was a believer in the Universalist faith.
