Maquoketa, Ia., Oct. 6--Early Friday morning our fellow townsmen, M. J. and Peter Hoffman, of the popular grocery firm of Hoffman Bros. of this city, were suddenly startled to receive a telephone message from LaMotte bearing the sad intelligence of the killing of their youngest brother, Aloysius Hoffman, aged 19 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. N. A. Hoffman, of LaMotte, Ia., which makes the third serious accident in Jackson County within a week.

The tragic killing, which happened between the hours of 3:30 and 4 o'clock Friday morning, October 5th, is clouded in mystery at this writing, as there was no eye-witness to it.

The young man had returned from a dance and took a friend and his family to their home, and was returning to his own home alone when the sad event took place. Shortly after a young friend passed by in his car, and discovered the unfortunate victim under his car--face downward--which did not have a scratch, but his back and sides from the neck down the spinal column was skinned, indicating that his back was broken, which will probably be developed by the coroner's jury, which had not rendered a verdict at this writing. The young friend referred to who made the discovery, being alone, hastened back to LaMotte and found, at that early hour, another man to help him raise the car that had one wheel off, but death was supposed to have been instantaneous.

Besides the parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. A. Hoffman, he leaves five brothers and one sister to mourn his loss: M. J. and P. J. Hoffman of this city, Mrs. Wm. Markus of Davenport, Ia.; John, Frank and Joseph Hoffman, at home, besides a large circle of friends who sympathize with the bereaved family.
