Reverend Michael William McCarthy -- Obituary

CURATE OF ST. JOSEPH’S SANATARIUM FOR 12 YEARS, FATHER MCCARTHY HAD MANY FRIENDS.

Rev. M. W. McCarthy, curate of St. Joseph's sanitarium, passed to his reward Saturday morning at 6 o’clock. He died suddenly, his death being entirely unexpected. However, he was slightly ill during the past few days. The deceased was born in Jackson County in 1859. His father was a pioneer resident of Jackson County and was also the proprietor of the Twelve-mile house, near Garryowen. He is survived by his mother and one brother, Eugene, who is the present proprietor of the Twelve-mile house. Reverend McCarthy was educated in the local schools and was a graduate of Dubuque College (formerly St. Josephs College). He spent two years in the theological seminaries of France and later attended the seminary located at Montreal, Canada, for two years. He was ordained to the priesthood by the late Archbishop Hennessey in 1885. His first years as a priest were spent in the Rickardsville parish. He was soon after transferred to Ossian, Iowa, where he spent twelve years as the parish priest. He was later appointed as curate of Sr. Joseph s Sanatarium and during the past twelve years has devoted his life to the spiritual uplift of the inmates of the sanatarium. His remains will be taken to the Twelve Mile house and funeral services will take place Monday at St Patrick’s church in Garryowen. Interment will be made in the family [?] in St. Patrick’s cemetery located in Garryowen.
