Maquoketa, Iowa, June 16--Elihu Shinkle, one of Maquoketa's most highly respected citizens, passed away at 5:30 o'clock Friday evening at his home on West Platt street, aged 84 years. Deceased was born in Ohio Sept. 3, 1832, and came to Iowa with his parents when five years of age. He was a straightforward, conscientious man and hunted up the equalization board and informed them that they had not raised his taxes high enough. His liberality was shown in various ways. His wife, son William and daughter Emma died several years ago and for the past three years his nephew, Ira Shinkle and wife lived with and cared for him in his declining years. He leaves to mourn his loss two nephews, Ira Shinkle and J. M. Shinkle, both of Maquoketa, and many other relatives and a host of friends. The funeral will be held at the home Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, followed by interment in Mt. Hope cemetery.
