Preston, Ia., Feb. 16--One by one the early pioneers of the country are crossing the silent river, never more to return. But the impress of their lives and the strong convictions of their moral worth are never lost, but ever left among those who knew them. The solemn event bring to all the surety of death and the brighter world beyond.

Mr. Jeremiah McCarthy, Sr., has gone to his reward, leaving a large circle of friends and acquaintances to mourn his death. He passed away at the home of his son, Ben, just north of Spragueville.

Mr. McCarthy has been in bad health for years, but never in that time did he lose interest in private or public life. Being always alert, he got much out of his later years.

Jeremiah McCarthy was born in Castletown, Ireland, and in the year of 1852 he came to America, where he located at Bellevue, where he lived the most of his life.

On May 6, 1862, he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Donnelly, who preceded him in death 18 years ago. To this happy union five children were born, one passing away in the year of 1903.

The body was taken to Bellevue Sunday to the W. P. Dunn home and on Monday was taken to St. Joseph's church at 9 o'clock, where Rev. N. J. Bies conducted the services.

He leaves to mourn his death Mrs. Con Downey and Ben McCarthy of Spragueville, Jerry of Bellevue, and Mrs. Con Crowleaf of Preston, besides 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

At the time of his death he was 90 years old.
