Maquoketa, Ia., Nov. 2--In the passing away of Gabriel Miller Monday, Jackson county has lost one of her most highly esteemed pioneer citizens, who will be mourned by many friends, besides the large circle of relatives.

Gabriel K. Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Miller, was born in Hamburg, Pa., March 24, 1832. He was brought up by Christian parents, a heritage of which he was proud, and at the age of 17 was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Hamburg. He came to Maquoketa in the spring of 1856 and worked at the stone mason trade for a number of years, and later bought a farm in Clinton county where he lived for a number of years, when he bought a farm in Jackson county where he spent his later years.

On November 7, 1858, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Kauffman and to this happy union of over 53 years, seven children were born, six of whom, namely Mahlon K., of Ekalaka, Mont.; William K. on the home farm; Mrs. Minnie Laush of Lost Nation, Ia.; Mrs. Mary Hottenstein, Moore, Montana, Mrs. Ella Lyon, Toledo, Iowa; Mrs. Emma Hottenstein, Macon, Mo., are living. Mrs. Miller died Mch. 16, 1912, since which time he lived with the grandson, Melvin Miller, and his daughter, Mrs. Laush and son William on the farm, where he passed peacefully away after an illness of a few days, incident to old age, at the mature age of 84 years, 7 months and 6 days.

Besides the sorrowing children, 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, one brother, Henry and two sisters in Pennsylvania, besides a large circle of friends mourn his departure.

Funeral services will be held at the home of his son, William, 6 miles southwest of Maquoketa, at 1 p.m., Friday, Nov. 3 and sermon at Reformed church in Maquoketa at 2 p.m. by his pastor, Rev. D. F. Boomershine, with burial in the mausoleum in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Lost Nation, Ia., Nov. 3--Gabriel Miller, father of Mrs. M. E. Laush of Lost Nation, died at the home of his son William, of Maquoketa Monday morning at 6:45 of heart disease. Mr. Miller is well known here, as he had made his home with his daughter here for some time. He was born March 24, 1832, and was at his death aged 84 years, 7 months and 6 days. Six children, four daughters and two sons survive, as follows: Mahlon Miller of Eklaha, Mont., and William, of Maquoketa; Mrs. Minnie Laush of Lost Nation, Mrs. Ella Lyon of Toledo, Ia.; Mrs. Emma Hottenstein of Anabel, Mo., and Mrs. Mary Hottenstein of Moore, Mont. All but the last named are here for the funeral. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Reformed church. The many friends here sympathize with the family in their bereavement.
