Maquoketa, Ia. Sept. 26--At the age of eighty years, Henry Herkes, a long-time resident of Bellevue, died at his home there last Thursday morning, death following a stroke of paralysis. He served in the civil war as a member of the 5th Ia. cavalry. The funeral was held Saturday.

Bellevue--At his home in North Bellevue on Thursday forenoon Henry Herkes, an old veteran and aged citizen of Bellevue passed from this life at the age of 80 years. On June 24, 1836, he was born in Luaenburg, Germany. He came to the United States in 1854, locating at Dubuque with his parents. Not long after they came to Bellevue. He enlisted in Company E. Fifth Iowa Cavalry when the Civil war broke out serving three years. He saw much of real service during the time he was at the front meeting the enemy in battle over 30 different times but at the expiration of this three years he came out of service broken in health, living the life of an invalid since. In 1866 Miss Elizabeth C?? became his wife whom he leaves to mourn his departure with two sons and two daughters. Saturday morning his funeral was held from the Bellevue Catholic church. Interment was made in the Bellevue Catholic cemetery.
