Sabra Sue Hovey (1940-2019)

Sabra "Sue" Hovey, 78, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2019, at the Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, in Davenport, Iowa.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 11 A.M., Thursday, May 9, 2019, at the United Church of Christ in Maquoketa. There is no visitation. Cremation has taken place and a private burial will be held at the Union Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa.

Sabra Sue Stout was born on November 28, 1940 in DeWitt, Iowa, to Glen and Florence (Harksen) Stout. At the age of three her mom died, and she was raised by her aunt Iva and Uncle Henry "Tootie" Smith whom she considered to be her parents. She was a 1958 graduate of DeWitt High School. She married Ronald E. Hovey on July 29, 1967 in Maquoketa, Iowa.

Prior to becoming a stay at home mom, "Sue" had worked in the billing and insurance department at the Jackson County Public Hospital in Maquoketa. In 1982, she and her husband Ronald opened Hov's Pub in Maquoketa. The restaurant quickly became a popular eatery and pub. They retired in October of 2006.

"Sue" was a member of the United Church of Christ in Maquoketa and the UCC Women's Fellowship. She enjoyed planting flowers, reading books and magazines, sports of all kinds, cooking and recipe collecting, decorating, and holidays. She especially enjoyed meeting and visiting with people.

Those left to honor her memory include three children, Ronelle (Jeff) Clark of Maquoketa, IA, Shane (Jodi) Hovey of Louisburg, KS, and Tyler Hovey of Maquoketa, IA; 5 grandchildren, Delaney Clark, Chance Dubinick, Sydney Clark, Jase Hovey, and Conlee Hovey; and a sister Terri Vetter of DeWitt, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents Glen and Florence (Harksen) Stout and Iva and Henry "Tootie" Smith, and her husband Ronald on October 27, 2008.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Sabra "Sue" Hovey memorial fund has been established.
