Eliza C. Hawes departed this life at 12 o'clock Saturday noon, aged about 78. She was born in Ireland and came to America when quite small. At the age of 24 she married L. J. Hawes, who preceded her about 16 years ago. They started out together in the hotel business at Savanna, Ill., for a short time; then ran one at Wyoming, coming to Maquoketa in the '70s, whence they ran the Midland hotel very successfully a good many years.

Mrs. Hawes will be remembered for her kindly and motherly qualities during those earlier hotel days, and the delicious meals she served. More especially by any who are alive, she never would allow any poor, unfortunate to go away hungry, if she could prevent.

Her life was rather active until about three weeks ago, was a devoted member of the Episcopal church.

Funeral will be held Tuesday from the house at 2:30 p.m., the minister of the Episcopal church officiating. Interment in Mount Hope cemetery.

Quite a number of nieces and nephews are left to mourn the loss of a dear, highly esteemed aunt.
