12 June 1916 - The Clinton Advertiser

Maquoketa, Ia. June 12--Wright Bentley, an old-time settler who lives about six miles south of Maquoketa on Route 5, passed away at 10:30 a.m. Friday, from apoplexy, his death coming as a shock to his many friends, although he had suffered from cancer for a long while, having had it removed from his cheek a few weeks ago at Savanna, Mo.

Mr. Bentley was in the city Saturday visiting friends and looking after business. He felt very much encouraged and in very good spirits, but yesterday the Angel of Mercy relieved him of his sufferings and reunited him with his wife, who preceded him only ten days or about two weeks ago.

He was born in New York state in 1833 and came to Iowa with his father, David Bentley, in 1841, settling on a farm out near Wright's corner, which made him one of our oldest, if not the oldest, pioneer, having had much to do with shaping the early affairs of this section.

Mr. Bentley stood high in this community and leaves a large circle of friends to mourn his loss, including one brother, Albert, living a farm east of Maquoketa, and two sisters, Mrs. Jessie Aud, near Elwood, and Mrs. Dave Beaver of this city; also two sons, Vern, on the home farm, and W. W. of Maquoketa; and two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Pangborn of Missouri, and Mrs. Bert Steis, living on a farm two and one-half miles south of town.
