Earl J. Decker

BERNARD, Iowa -- Services for Earl J. Decker, 65, of 17067 Higginsport Road, Bernard, will be at 10:30 am Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen, rural Bernard.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call until 9 pm today at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, where the wake service will be said at 7 pm.

Mr. Decker was a semi-retired farmer in the Bernard area and owned the Decker Cafe in Bernard.

He was born on Dec. 17, 1925, in Bernard, son of Lawrence and Teresa (Takes) Decker. He died of natural causes at 6:35 am Monday, March 4, 1991, at Mercy Health Center, St. Joseph's Unit, Dubuque.

He married Rose Feldman on Oct. 19, 1948; she died on Jan. 25, 1988. He later married Carmelene (Small) McDonnell on Oct. 20, 1989, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen; she survives.

He attended St. Patrick's School in Bernard and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and its rosary society.

Also surviving are two sons, Larry and James "Jay," both of Bernard; four daughters, Mrs. Gary (Bonnie) Hancock of Epworth, Debi O'Brien of Des Moines, and Mrs. David (Carol) Shanahan and Mrs. Steve (Margie) Bradley, both of Bernard; four step-sons, Rick, Jim "J.J" and Pat McDonnell, all of Bernard, and Tim McDonnell of Cascade; a step-daughter, Kathryn Ries of Strawberry Point; 12 grandchildren and eight step-grandchildren; a brother, Leo Hirtz of Bernard; and eight sisters, Veronica Gross and Mary Catherine Connolly, both of Cascade, Loretta McCarthy of Bernard, Mrs. Jim (Sally) Hoerner, Jean McClain and Mrs. Clem (Imelda) McDermott, all of Dubuque, Betty Johnson and Mrs. Bob (Rose Mary) Devaney of Monticello.

He was also preceded in death by a son, David, in May of 1956.

An Earl J. Decker Memorial Fund has been established.
