MAQUOKETA, Iowa - LaVerne H. Merfeld, 81, of Maquoketa, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Maquoketa. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Garryowen. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Lahey Funeral Home, Maquoketa, where a Catholic Daughter rosary will be recited at 4 p.m.

She was born on Feb. 24, 1931, in Bernard, daughter of Leo and Lettie (Rogers) Merfeld. She received a bachelor's degree at University of Dubuque and her master's degree at Clarke College in Dubuque.

LaVerne taught in a one-room schoolhouse from 1950 to 1955, and then taught at Andrew School District, until retiring in 1993.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Maquoketa, where she was an active volunteer with many church activities. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court St. Raphael 1156, Maquoketa.

LaVerne enjoyed bowling for many years, playing cards and attending senior citizens' groups.

Surviving are her siblings, Mary Tigges, Leonard (Eileen) Merfeld, and Gerry Skahill, all of Dubuque, Eileen (Allan) Redmond, of Marion, Orlie (Mazie) Merfeld, of East Dubuque, Ill., Carl Merfeld, of Bernard, Willie (Mary Ann) Merfeld, of Bellevue, and Madonna (Paul) McAndrews, of Dubuque; a brother-in-law, Paul Kane, of Bernard; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Margaret Buchanan and Grace Kane; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Merfeld; and three brothers-in-law, Alfred Tigges, Tom Buchanan and Bob Skahill.
