Dubuque Telegraph Herald – November 2, 1931

Maquoketa, Ia., Nov. 2. - Special: Funeral services for John Worth Van Meter were held here Saturday, the Rev. D. E. Killoren, pastor of the Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be made in the Andrew Cemetery. The Odd Fellows have charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Van Meter had lived in Andrew most of his life, coming here with his parents at the age of 8 years. He was born in Lancaster, Ohio, July 29, 1849. He learned the carpenter trade, at Andrew, and followed it during his active years.

He was married Dec. 15, 1873, to Miss Addie Elrick, and they established their home in Andrew, where they resided until Mrs. Van Meter's death, in 1917. About nine years ago he came to Maquoketa to live and it was here that his death occurred.

He is survived by two sons, Wilmont of Greybull, Wyo., who was here for the funeral services, and Leo of Portland, Ore., and one daughter, Mrs. J. E. Thompson of Thermopolis, Wyo. He has also six grandchildren. One brother, T. J. Van Meter of Andrew, and two sisters, Mrs. Ella Walp of Graig, Canada, and Mrs. Dell Melton of Marshalltown, also survive him.
